Summary

The AstroTube comprises a Flexible Composite Member (FCM - a flight proven proprietary CFRP tape spring) which can be rolled into a coil to achieve a small volume when stowed and high axial stiffness when deployed. The stiffness of the deployed configuration and buckling load are tuneable by varying the FCM material composition and cross section (diameter and subtended angle). These variables form a trade-off with mass and stowed volume.

Key features

  • Stowage efficient
  • Low mass & complexity
  • Up to 2 metres
  • Reatractable
  • Partial deployment available
