Key highlights
Acktar's Magic Black™ Coatings provide extremely low reflectance and high emissivity in EUV-VIS-NIR frequencies.
They are widely deployed in high-resolution imaging instruments, such as terrestrial cameras and space telescopes, usually for straylight suppression.
Magic Black™ Coatings offer Acktar's blackest black results in visible wavelengths and come with almost zero outgassing and no particulation.
They are suitable for use on a wide array of substrates and undergo regular testing to meet the expected optical, thermal, and mechanical qualification requirements of a wide range of space missions.
The coatings have an operating temperature range of -269°C to 380°C and a typical thickness of just 3-5µm, with a high level of customization to an accuracy of a few microns - making the coatings particularly suitable for optical systems with sharp edges.
Mission highlights
This product has been used in the following key missions:
- James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) - an orbiting infrared observatory building on the legacy of the Hubble Space Telescope. The JWST is a 6200 kg system designed to extend our understanding of the universe in a wide variety of areas.
- BepiColombo - a 2-satellite mission to Mercury, to study the planet's geology, exosphere, magnetosphere and more.
- Onboard the ISS - Acktar has contributed coatings to the International Space Station, supporting it’s critical research and technology development work.
- FLEX - a fluorescence imaging satellite designed to join the orbit of Sentinel-3 and utilize the combined observation capabilities to map global photosynthetic activity, to improve global vegetation detection.
- JUICE (Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer) - an ESA-led mission to make a detailed study of Jupiter, Europe, Ganymede, and Callisto - with a suite of observation instruments.
