Key highlights

Sophisticated space structures, for example, antenna reflectors or optical benches, require special materials to meet the demands placed on them.

INVENT has developed a carbon fibre honeycomb with a low coefficient of thermal expansion and high stiffness to significantly improve the thermoelastic stability of these structures.

Applications

  • Highly stable structures, e.g. instruments
  • Optical benches
  • Antenna reflectors

Key features

  • low CTE & CME (high thermo-elastic stability)
  • high stiffness
  • high strength
  • low density
  • high or low thermal conductivity
  • high service temperatures
  • ITAR free
  • low outgassing
  • venting holes to enable vacuum applications

Standard materials: CFRP or GFRP
Density: 36-40 kg/m³
Cell Size: 10 mm

Customization

  • capability to mill specific shapes on request
  • can be bonded to CFRP/CFRP faceskins as a ready-to-use sandwich structure

Flight heritage

  • H2Sat (Flight proven TRL9)
  • ExoMars (Flight ready TRL8)
