Key highlights

Our MADES magnetic characterization service features an adjustable non-metallic frame, 12 magnetic sensors, and dedicated algorithms to estimate dipole position, direction, and magnitude. This service enables comprehensive magnetic cleanliness testing for individual ADCS hardware, sensitive payloads, or full satellite systems without the need for a conventional magnetic cleanliness device. System configurations and dimensions can be customized upon request to match your mission requirements.

MADES has been cross-validated through testing on the E.T.PACK-F satellite, against a conventional dipole estimation setup using a Helmholtz cage and fluxgate sensors. Additional experimental tests with controlled dipole sources demonstrated reliable operation, confirming readiness for use in small-satellite missions. The technical framework and performance analysis supporting this validation are published in the paper:

Sharifi, G., Gonzalez-Garcia, J., & Sanchez-Arriaga, G. A Low-Cost Experimental Setup for Determination of the Residual Magnetic Dipole of Small Satellites. IEEE Sensors Journal, 25(14), 26530-26541, 2025.

Key features

  • 3-Axis Dipole Evaluation: Capable of calculating complete dipole position, direction, and magnitude.
  • Standalone Testing: Enables comprehensive magnetic cleanliness testing for individual ADCS hardware, magnetically sensitive payloads, or complete satellite systems without the need for a dedicated magnetic cleanliness device.
  • Tailored Configurations: Offers highly adaptable design options where system dimensions and total capacity can be customized upon request to meet your specific mission requirements.
  • Standard Volume: 400 x 400 x 430 mm (customizable upon request).
  • Sensor Measurement Range: ±1100 μT.
  • Sensor Quality Metrics: Features a noise level (ση) of 15 nT, a bias (σβ) of 100 nT, and a sensitivity level (Ss) of 13 nT.
  • Estimation Performance Accuracy: the performance under test conditions of ambient noise bellow 200 nT  and dipole moment above 0.02 Am2 are:
    • Dipole magnitude error: 6%
    • Dipole direction error: 8°
    • Dipole position error: 8 mm
