Key highlights
Astrolight is developing satcom infrastructure that is based on free-space optical links. Rather than wireless radio transmissions, frequencies in optical domain offer almost unlimited spectrum and are license free.
Astrolight will run an optical ground-station-as-a-service business model, similar to current radio ground station providers. In this model, satellite operators will order an on-demand or scheduled data link to Astrolight's network of global ground stations situated in low cloud cover regions. Initial goal is to provide at least one access per orbit for a typical LEO satellite and data downlink capacity of 1 Terabyte per day, assuming a 1 Watt CubeSat compatible laser terminal on a satellite.
Astrolight is a Lithuanian high-tech company focused on engineering communication technologies. It was founded in 2019 in Vilnius by researchers from Center for Physical Sciences and Technology and Vilnius Tech university.
