Key highlights

The Colossus Pelican is a radiation-tolerant solid-state drive (SSD) designed for space applications.

Pelican provides the capacity and performance of modern commercial SSDs, with the reliability of legacy systems. A dual-string redundant design based on qualified components provides superior dependability and fault tolerance.

Colossus’ custom controller provides an opportunity to tune performance to customer needs. The design can be optimized for specific workloads, and special features such as cache prewarming are available. The design also features a computational engine, providing the ability to process data on the device itself, reducing the workload on the host system.

  • High Capacity: Store data for later downlink, or keep reference data to support image processing tasks such as change detection.
  • Autonomous: Built-in computational engine enables processing of data without transporting it to another system. Background tasks can automatically flag interesting data.
  • Radiation-Tolerant: Designed for the harsh environment of space. Commercial NAND chips are hardened with our proprietary hardware, firmware, and software protections.
