Key highlights

The Center for Telematics (ZfT) is an independent research institute that applies interdisciplinary approaches from telematics to develop advanced solutions in space technology and other fields.

ZfT's research focuses on several areas, including self-organizing multi-satellite systems, precision attitude control systems for nano-satellites, rovers for planetary exploration, and the integration of autonomous reactions with remote control approaches.

The institute also develops solutions for remote maintenance of industrial plants and tele-robotics, leveraging its expertise in computer science and control engineering to support the development of extremely miniaturized electronic components.

ZfT's research has been recognized internationally, including receipt of awards such as the Frank-J.-Malina medal and the Eugen-Sänger medal. The institute has also been selected as a host institution for top European Research Council awards, including Advanced Grants and Synergy Grants.

Some notable projects include:

  • The NetSat mission, which consists of four CubeSats and aims to demonstrate autonomous formation control of a 3D-configuration. The mission has been active in orbit since September 28, 2020.
  • The QUBE mission, which will demonstrate key quantum technologies for secure communication using a nano-satellite weighing 4 kg. ZfT's contributions address the satellite platform, precision attitude control, and testing of the optical link. Launch is planned for July 1, 2024.
  • The TOM (Telematics earth Observation Mission), which will employ satellite formation technologies to generate 3D images of the Earth's surface using photogrammetry methods. Launch is planned at the end of 2024.
